Get the latest news and videos for this game daily, no spam, no fuss.

Greetings, PC adventurer! Maybe you've conquered vanilla Skyrim but not yet plucked up the courage to delve into the dark, intimidating depths of modding. Lucky for you, you coward, there's never been a better time to start.

With the recent launch of the Skyrim Creation Kit, a tool for empowering Skyrim modders to create and edit game elements, there's a whole slew of brilliant mods that have just arrived and are on the horizon.

That kit can also publish mods directly to the Steam Workshop platform, and with this nifty little interface, you can manage a whole bunch of popular mods from within the simple and familiar surroundings of the Steam application. Spy a mod you want? Simply click 'subscribe' and next time you open the game, BAM: it installs. Wonderful.

We had a trawl through the offerings of the Steam Workshop and returned with our five favorites. Enjoy!

Fall of the Space Core, Vol. 1

It's Portal 2 all up in your Skyrim. This mod from Valve and Bethesda adds Portal 2's chatty, space-obsessed core to your game. He'll come crashing down in Tamriel, and you'll go pick him up. It'll be great.

Ice Island

When you install this mod, you too can visit the coldest vacation spot in Skyrim. Oh, and there's a giant at the summit for some reason. Naturally, we murdered him.

Rabbit Rage

This mod appears to be an homage to Monty Python's The Holy Grail. It makes the bunnies sound super mean, although they don't go as far a ripping your throat out…yet.

Bigger Giants

This mod sure makes the giants significantly more intimidating. By contrast, however, it makes their mammoths look super cute! D'awww.

Open Cities Skyrim

Loading screens can be a thing of the past when entering cities with this mod; just open the gate and waltz on through. Currently, this only works for Riften and Markarth, but it's surely only a matter of time before you can go horse riding through all of your favorite holds and cities.

Do you have a favourite mod to recommend? Share it around in the comments below

SkyEdit?[edit]

Should this page mention that the beta of SkyEdit is available now as an alternative? It might be helpful, but I don't know if it belongs here. — Unsigned comment by 108.210.16.113 (talk) at 01:12 on 26 December 2011

That's a tough call. In the long run, I'd say no, but given that there's pretty much nothing else, maybe. As a compromise, maybe you could post a link to it in this discussion, then those that are looking for alternatives will still find it, but we're not opening the doors to turning the article into a link farm. Robin Hoodtalk 02:25, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
Also that only lets you edit strings(as far as I've seen) and the creation kit will do much more. — Unsigned comment by 71.63.228.47 (talk) at 22:25 on 7 January 2012

Something that's bothered me since the release of Skyrim[edit]

Something that's bothered me since the release of Skyrim:

Everything I've seen said that the unreleased creation kit will be identical to the software that they used to create Skyrim, and that Skyrim was designed on PCs.

Why didn't they just release it at the same time as Skyrim? The only clue I've heard was adding Steam support to distribute the mods. Is this the only reason we've waited 2 months for the kit?

By now, I expected an unofficial patch to have been released repairing all those places where the rock's surfaces fail to intersect with the ground, and you can see that it is hollow. I've seen several instances of this. I don't expect them to waste patching time tracking all of these down, but the community is usually quick to fix these if given the tools. NFR 18:24, 6 January 2012 (UTC)

My theory is that they have some bits in there that might spoil threads for DLC, and put off releasing it until closer to the release dates for the DLC. Or they were hoping to spread the news reports of the games release and news reports of nude mods out a bit.24.62.136.31 05:18, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

The obvious answer is the lack of consumer-level documentation and the fact that dev tools are commonly thrown together by the tool dev team in visual basic or similar. Dev tools are typically very 'hacky' and not end user ready, they are most likely essentially re-writing the dev kit in another language so as to be more user friendly, with documentation, a sensible layout, tooltips and the like. --124.150.81.251 14:31, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
That would only make sense if this wasn't the 5th time around.. (Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout NV, and now Skyrim) 94.23.251.210 20:35, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Update to release date[edit]

Updated the release date section to reflect the fact that Bethesda, in that Nowgamer article, have not said the CS will be out in early February, only that it won't be far behind the patch due in early Feb. As I'm sure you're aware, 'not far behind' is completely meaningless in developer parlance. - 220.245.246.77 09:07, 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Released yet?[edit]

An anon has been updating the page saying it's out now (I know it's the 7th of feburary and its said to come out today) but I cannot find anything actually saying to the Creation Kit is out, does anyone have any proof its out? I think we should wait until we get a link proving it before saying its out (Eddie The Head 11:18, 7 February 2012 (UTC))

The Kit is now up, just downloaded it. About a 40 MB download. I will make a small edit to the page to reflect this since there are probably a lot of people checking it today. 74.198.150.85 18:40, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
This, this, and this should be evidence enough. 12.107.122.230 20:46, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Only for steam[edit]

Seing as I suck at wiki stuff, I'll just add my suggestion here: maybe add that its ONLY available on steam, and only if you have bought skyrim on your account. — Unsigned comment by 84.83.140.238 (talk) at 19:59 on 7 February 2012

I bought the DVD version of Skyrim from a shop and bought Hearthfire & Dawnguard as Steam downloads. The Creation Kit *was* available for me to download from Steam, so I don't think you need to have bought Skyrim itself from Steam. / Þ 193.167.170.16 11:09, 21 April 2013 (GMT)

Download size[edit]

The article claims that the Creation Kit is 40MB to download, which reflects what Steam says when you begin the download. However, like many other things, that does not match with the progress bar of the download: it shows 85.1MB total to be downloaded for the Creation Kit. Thoughts? --74.102.134.192 20:13, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

I corrected it already. --AKB 20:18, 7 February 2012 (UTC)
I just downloaded it (21-Apr-2013) and it was 89 MB. / Þ 193.167.170.16 11:10, 21 April 2013 (GMT)

Mods for console[edit]

http://www.videogamer.com/xbox360/the_elder_scrolls_v_skyrim/news/skyrim_mod_tools_planned_for_360_and_ps3.html Whatever happened to this? It's like Todd Howard said that one thing about it and everyone completely forgot about it, including himself. — Unsigned comment by 50.106.72.76 (talk) at 18:59 on 11 February 2012 (UTC)

The article you link states that they were talking to the console makers and were having problems to convince them. That is still the case. -CoolGamer 19:10, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Voice timing[edit]

This has been marked as a question that needs to be answered.

Using the default voices, the timing between attacks and grunts are fine. However when using other voices they are usually late. I'm trying to find a way to make my character grunt earlier if i'm using a different voice type (I'm using MaleNordCommander) so that grunting fits with the timing of attacking. NPCs have notably an earlier grunt, notably while power attacking. This issue is most attended when playing as a Dremora, which has a very long grunt when power attacking but is very late because that very long grunt occurs when the playable Dremora swings a weapon, especially when power attacking. Does anyone have a way to solve this? SFK363 16:21, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Please, keep the version number accurate[edit]

There have been some incorrect changes in the wiki lately. In order to see the current version you need to find the CreationKit executable, check its attributes et voilà. — Unsigned comment by Creationkit (talk • contribs) at 14:23 on 20 August 2012

My version number is showing 1.4.23.0 :-/ confusing somehow. Can someone please confirm that v1.6.89.0 is the final version as lately there have been etries such as 1.4.23.0, 1.6.91.0 or 1.7.7.0.6? — Unsigned comment by 188.154.4.40 (talk) at 05:57 on 24 August 2012
Yes, 1.6.89.0 is the current version displayed in Help, About and on the executable itself. Robin Hoodtalk 08:33, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Dawnguard still crashes CK[edit]

So, I edited my SkyrimEditor.ini file to accommodate Dawnguard and Hearthfire, but I'm still getting a 'Unable to find masterfile:Update.esm' error when trying to load Dawnguard, and the CK crashes. Cisco vwlc license. Are there any other solutions? Schiffy (talk) 19:16, 1 November 2012 (GMT)

This is a new issue introduced with the 1.8.151.0.7 patch. The CK can't load the new Update.esm and Dawnguard.esm requires that. Hopefully there will be a CK update soon. If you still have an old version of Update.esm, switching that out will help. HearthFires.esm doesn't require Update.esm, so loading that should work. --Alfwyn (talk) 19:30, 1 November 2012 (GMT)
Well, there goes my shot of trying to look into the Drain Vitality bug. Schiffy (talk) 20:57, 1 November 2012 (GMT)

Need Help[edit]

Hi. I am a noob to these things, so please bear with me. When I go to creation kit, there is no option to expand the categories, ie there are no plus signs next to the words. Why is this? --MortalKombat240500 (talk) 19:13, 15 July 2013 (GMT)

Are you choosing a master file or plugin first? There are still sub-levels without them, but there are considerably fewer. I've never heard of this problem as you are describing it, however. --AKB 20:11, 15 July 2013 (GMT)

Elder Scrolls Magic Collection Revised - Creation Kit advice?[edit]

Hey I was a D&D kinda guy when I was younger and since playing Skyrim I've noticed that it's spell system makes it kinda pointless, unlike the rest of the damage systems for weapons and enchantments etc the spell damages don't improve.

Being 100th level in Destruction and only doing 8pts a second just like a 1st is a little patronizing don't you think?

I've noticed that the element-based spells aren't really an improvement on each other(Novice/Apprentice etc) just different ways of using the element. e.g. ~ Gout of Flame ~ Bolt of Flame ~ Fireball ~ Flaming Cloak ~ Centered Firestorm ~

So I don't think they should do different amounts of damage, they should all be based on your level at that school of magic e.g. 2pts/level at 100th gives you a spell equal to that of a 100th level swordsman or archer.

I'm new to the Creation Kit and I've had a play with it but can't find out how to do this, can anyone help me out? :) — Unsigned comment by Valandil (talk • contribs) at 06:05 on 14 August 2013

The Creation Kit wiki has a lot more information on this sort of thing (modding) than our wiki does, as we have more simple things like a basicCK page and a page describing various console commands. Otherwise, the forums may be a good place to find some help quickly in a more personal atmosphere. — ABCface 06:36, 14 August 2013 (GMT)

Useful almost-undocumented feature:[edit]

I've discovered in the course of trying to get item location maps for skyrim like we have for oblivion that selecting any 'spreadsheet-style' view in the CK and pressing ctrl-f5 gives you the option to export the view's contents as a tab-delimited plaintext file. Haven't found a way to do it for many things all at once yet. Should this be noted on the page, perhaps? Xolroc (talk) 18:37, 27 October 2013 (GMT)

Try this page instead. It sounds interesting and probably wouldn't hurt. Vely 19:10, 27 October 2013 (GMT)

Finding it on Steam[edit]

The information in this article seems to be incorrect / out of date. The Creation Kit can be found under LIBRARY > TOOLS where it is listed as 'Creation Kit', among a very large list of unrelated stuff.Ninepaw (talk) 09:08, 8 November 2013 (GMT)

I've corrected it. Vely 15:10, 8 November 2013 (GMT)
